Annie Lou Square's (b.1977, Gee’s Bend, AL) relationship with quilting began as a child due to her mother’s involvement with the Freedom Quilting Bee: a quilting cooperative founded in 1966, during the Civil Rights era, by the women of Gee’s Bend as a means of economic survival, political self-determination, and collective empowerment. In 2020, Square began translating the community’s quilting tradition into bags, bringing its distinctive patchwork rhythms to a new form.
